I couldn't wait to get to the Fairy Pools. Chris was skeptical. They weren't even mentioned in the most recent edition of the Lonely Planet guidebook.
We headed there as soon as we dropped off our bags at the Bradford Lodges, our most expensive accommodations in Scotland. Our lodge, just behind a funeral parlor, was called Neist Point, one of the few places we didn't see on Skye. We had to drive several miles on a single track road, our first, which required the frequent use of passing places.
The pools descend in small waterfalls from a foothill of the Cuillins. Both the parking lot and the trail were mobbed. It felt a little like the couple of times I went to Studio 54. Don't laugh--the spot definitely had an exclusive energy, like we were among the travel elect. That's probably because they owe their popularity to social media. #fairypools pulls up 90,000 photos on Instagram. Here's a dozen or so more.
Are you familiar with the Hollywood term "high concept"? That's the Fairy Pools in a nutshell. Who wouldn't want to see a place with a name like that?
We hiked higher than most people. Sheep grazed on the hills and you could see the water source in the distance.
Watch to see my souvenir of our visit.
