If you're a Jan & Dean fan ("
Dead Man's Curve,"
Little Old Lady From Pasadena") you may enjoy Joel Selvin's exhaustively researched book about the early days of the music scene in Los Angeles. It really only came alive for me in the last section which chronicles the discovery of the Mamas and the Papas, Phil Spector producing "
River Deep, Mountain High" (poor Tina!) and Brian Wilson playing
Pet Sounds for the very appreciative Brits. Oh, and there's some good stuff about
Nancy Sinatra, too, who owes her career to
Lee Hazlewood as much as
Ol' Blue Eyes himself.
