Santa Teresa
A marmoset joined us for lunch in Santa Teresa, a hipster neighborhood clinging to the side of one of Rio's many mountains. The food wasn't nearly as good as the ambiance.
As are some of the vehicles.

The views from Santa Teresa can be spectacular with clear skies, as we learned a few days later. Anthony, our guide, took us to Parque das Ruinas, a Belle Epoque mansion.

Jardim Botanica
Periods of rain didn't stop us from visiting Rio's enormous botanical garden. A stand of royal palms, planted more than two centuries ago, have created a grand alley. Brazil was still a Portuguese colony when the garden first opened.
Our umbrellas got quite the workout.
Cacti seemed a little incongruous on such a wet day.
This heron didn't mind.
The dull gray skies intensified the color of the tropical flowers.
None of us had ever seen a bloom quite like this.
It was my first visit to an Orchideario.
Bromeliads and insectivorous plants were kept indoors, too.
Signs in Braille were few and far between.
Some statues blended in well with the landscape better than others.

The Villa In Rio
This journey to the Southern Hemisphere begins with Thom's dazzling smile, captured here in Leblon, one of Brazil's toniest neighborhoods.
He paid so much for those pearly whites over the years that his dentist offered him use of his villa in Rio. Thom treated me to the trip as a belated retirement gift. Steven, Andrew and Christine joined us.
Teresa and Andrea prepared our hearty breakfasts and delicious meals, served with big dollops of good cheer.
Paco acted as the feathered alarm clock. He's definitely an early morning bird.
The villa's furnishings are as over-the-top as this fresh floral arrangement.
