Two Weeks In Florida

Christine invited me to join her for a couple of week-long getaways this winter at her condo in Lake Worth, Florida.  We spent a lot of our time with Rick, her next door neighbor.

He and his longtime companion, Mark, now deceased, both had green thumbs.  Just look at this orchid Mark began cultivating several years ago.

Rick suggested we visit the Four Arts Botanical Gardens in Palm Beach on a cool afternoon during my February visit.  He loves to take photographs as much as I do.

Rick managed a palm nursery before he retired to take photos full time.  He shipped a lot of palms to wealthy people in California.  They rarely thrived in the California desert so repeat business was very good.

As you enter, there's a Chinese garden.

There's a sculpture garden, too.

Jim Dine sculpted this parrot.

If Diana Rigg were a nun, this is how she would look.

Oh yeah, there were some pretty plants too.

Restaurants, bars and bicycles line Lake Worth's main drag.

No night on the town is complete without at stop at Kilwins.

The caramel on those apples is homemade.

In March, I arrived a day ahead of Christine and explored her neighborhood on my own. There's more than one way to take a selfie.

Men and birds do love to fish.

Many of the workers who built the homes in Palm Beach or served the owners lived in Lake Worth in small cottages like these.  New York's miserable winter had me fantasizing about buying one.

This cottage looks like it could be Cherry Grove.

But several nearby homes rank pretty high on the grand scale.

Christine lives across the street from the Birthday Cake Castle.

Renovations had just been completed by the new owner, who opened it up as a show house to benefit the local American Red Cross.  We visited one morning with Rick's friend, Chris, who was visiting from Panama City.  First, we had to get past the lions.  This one looks constipated.

Photos were prohibited but I snuck a few.

What a waste of a back yard!  Where's the pool?

Christine LOVES Trader Joe's.

After stocking up, we hit another garden show, this time in the backyard of a Viet Nam war veteran and his wife, an artist.  The flora was more interesting than it had been in Palm Beach.

The vet told us he picked up the seeds of this unusually colored plant in Hawaii.

Here's his wife's take on it.

See the lizard?  That's some long tail!

I had my first ride on a golf cart.

Christine has a friend who let us use her pool one afternoon.  It faces the Intracoastal waterway.

Don't tell anybody, but Christine coordinated her toe nail polish with the webbing of the chaise lounge.

Later that evening we picked up Audrey, who was visiting her mother in Hollywood for dinner in Fort Lauderdale at the 15th Street Fisheries, also on the Intracoastal.

Audrey had the king crab special.

On my last day, after a quick stop at Wal Mart where the parking lot trees were in full flower, I drove north 30 miles on A1A.  I just missed the guided tour of the Jupiter Beach Inlet lighthouse.

Carlin Park offered a stretch of empty beach, good for recreation.  Just ask this shorebird.

These guys were having a great time, too.

Thanks, Christine!
