Trifecta @ the Met

The Mysterious Landscapes of Hercules Segers:

Imagine painstakingly engraving tiny copper plates with detailed landscapes you've never actually seen and then having butchers use the prints you make to wrap their meat.  Four centuries later, scholars and other artists recognize your genius due in large part to technology that enlarges your work to a scale so that it finally can be appreciated.

Or just watch the amazing video produced by the Met for the exhibit.

Irving Penn Centennial:

Peruvians, French bakers, cigarettes and celebrities--Penn shot 'em all, usually in black and white!

Richard Burton
Truman Capote
LOVE the peace sign on her belly!

Marisa Berenson, pre car crash

The museum also exhibits the theatrical backdrop that Penn used for his portraits.  Smart curator.

Seurat's Circus Sideshow:

This thematic exhibit occupies a downstairs gallery I'd never visited.

A cigarette ember drew me to this painting by an unfamiliar artist.

The Met is displaying this enormous triptych for the first time.
