Florida Nature Walk

During Chris's New Year's stay at the Florida Folly, we visited the Royal Palm Beach Pines Natural Area with Christine early one Saturday morning, before the winter sun got too hot.

Driving past, you might see nothing but scrub pine abutting a suburban development.

We took a closer look.   The semi-scorched terrain tells a story about a fire in the not-too-distant past.  Hard to tell if it had been wild or deliberate.

Looks like a woodpecker created a stovepipe birdhouse.

Sawtooth palm dominates the new growth. A sign prohibits the collection of the plant's seeds.

Flames singed some of the palm trunks, too.

Christine and Chris spotted two small snakes.  I caught a tiny toad near an anthill.  Size is relative.

We gathered fresh pine cones for display back at the Florida Folly in the beautiful bowl Patrick, Marty and Grayson gave us as a housewarming present last weekend.

I snapped this photo, my favorite, before Chris downloaded an app that identifies plant life.

Any bit of color really pops in this environment.

Natural red or not?
