Mercy Street (4*)

Jennifer Haigh taught me more about abortion in this even-keeled novel, which radiates from a clinic in South Boston, than an entire life of skimming newspaper articles that reflect my educated biases.  She almost sympathetically illuminates the back story of a couple of men in the right-to-life movement.  But more importantly, she explores women's experiences on both sides of the argument, with an unexpected ending that lands her thesis in the very nuanced territory where choice properly belongs.
