FLASHBACK: Oculus Preview (2004)

When Santiago Calatrava was announced as the architect for the Oculus, I instantly flashed on the Milwaukee Art Museum.

The museum, which fronts Lake Michigan, was his first commission in the United States, completed 15 years before our nation's most expensive train station.

Its color, unusual shape, and waterfront location reminded me a bit of the Sydney Opera House.

I visited with two of my photogenic colleagues from Ensuring Solutions to Alcohol Problems, Eric Goplerud and Joanna Sabin.  I briefly worked for the organization, a think tank at George Washington University, as a freelance writer and researcher.

PATH commuters to and from New Jersey in New York City will recognize these space-age architectural features

. . . but I suspect a museum environment will be kinder to the white interior than a transit hub.

Dale Chihuly couldn't ask for a better showcase for his colorful blown glass.

But upon first visit, the art was almost secondary to the amazing building itself.

I snapped this picture of the moon emerging from the parking garage.

An outdoor sculpture reflected the sunset.

A local recommended that we try the custard at the Kiltie, a drive-in which conformed more to my preconception of Midwest architecture.

Had our hotel--a stolid contrast to the soaring lines of the museum--forgotten to take down the Christmas tree?  It was nearly May.
