Piazza San Marco

I visited Venice as a kid, but honestly the only thing I can recall is that Charlie, our new poodle, took a dump in St. Mark's Square. Now that memory has been replaced with another: I failed to find my way back to the hotel from the same spot five different times. Even maps--to say nothing of unreliable GPS--are useless. It took me a day or two to realize that getting lost on the winding, ancient passageways is part of the fun. All you really need to do is look for the occasional sign pointing in the direction of major landmarks, like San Marco or Rialto.

Nightfall clears daytime crowds from the square.

Tourists with hotel rooms listened to "Moon River"from Breakfast at Tiffany's.  Henry Mancini's classic tune won the Oscar for Best Song the year before I visited Venice with my parents.  It seemed oddly appropriate.

Harry's Bar is just around the corner.  It's definitely the kind of place you would have found Holly Golightly but I was too intimidated to enter.
