Fate is vicious as a reptile. It always ends up pushing us to the wrong side of handrail.
Says one feckless immigrant nanny to the perfect white one of the title who just happens to end up murdering the two children she's been hired to care for so that their parents, an intense brown woman married to a charming Frenchman, can self-actualize and earn money. Leila Slimani sure knows how to push buttons; her lyrical sledgehammer may also shatter them in the process. If I were a new parent struggling to achieve the proper "life balance," reading this highly provocative novel would induce paralysis.
