A Little Life (4*)

Buckets of blood are spilled on stage in Ivo Van Hove's compelling if text-heavy adaptation of a very miserable book that many people, myself not included, revere.   I didn't see how it could be done but the capable Dutch cast brings Hanya Yanagihara's characters vividly to life.  What they don't do, however, is make them any more believable unless Christian allegory is your thing.  Van Hove wisely focuses on the relationship between Jude and Willem; unfortunately their ten minutes of happiness does not redeem a three-plus hour exercise in extreme sadism although A Little Life will exponentially increase your disgust for pedophilia.
