Almost Famous (3*)
Cameron Crowe should have left his wonderfully nostalgic movie alone. Although there are many fine performances in the musical adaptation--particularly those of Solea Pfeiffer as Penny Lane, Anika Larsen as the anxious mom, and Rob Colletti as Lester Bangs (has any critic ever had a better name?)--this very faithful but frenetic production tries too desperately to replicate the film, the medium to which Crowe's superb Boomer coming-of-age story stubbornly belongs. And the original music by Tom Kitt simply can't compare to the admittedly weak covers of hits like "Tiny Dancer" and "It Ain't Easy." Not awful by any means, just overstuffed and disappointing.
